Just Ask the Mycelium

This Saturday (December 21), is the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It's the longest night of the year.

For millenia, the Winter Solstice was observed by our ancestors — all of our ancestors, regardless of the time of year — as one of the most important days of the entire year. Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza, and The Great Sphinx are just a few of the ancient sites that align perfectly with the solstices twice per year.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice takes place during the cold, dark season of the year. Since everything and everyone else in Nature recedes back into the earth at this time, traditionally, Winter Solstice was observed as the beginning of a season when humans would follow suit. Just as the seed descends into the depths of the earth to gather energy and strength for the coming cycle — growing and sprouting in Spring and then blooming in Summer — so does the human soul descend into the spiritual depths to gather the spiritual strength that it's going to need to make it through the coming cycle of the seasons in our lives.

The Winter Solstice ushers in a season of darkness my ancestors called Yule. The winter invites us to climb back into the womb of darkness and to embrace the darkness as the source of energy that comes from within — as opposed to energy we get from external sources.

In the womb of winter, we discover a sort of radiant darkness that's full of life! It's the place where dreaming happens. We begin dreaming up the new cycle before anything actually starts happening. We let ourselves confess — even if only to ourselves — what our dreams even are.

Last year on the Winter Solstice, I attended a ceremony (as a student instead of the guide — I gave myself a treat!), where I pulled the card pictured above. The card was dark and the only words read, The Lower World, but as soon as I saw it, I instantly channeled an energy I heard say, "Magical things happen in the dark…just ask the mycelium.” During the ceremony, the guide played the rainstick over my body for what felt like an eternity. With the sound of each trickle, I felt something like a mycelium network dancing to the rainstick throughout the entire neurology of my body. My whole neurological system felt as though it was a mycelium network connecting me to everything — to all the possibilities that wombs and dreams are made of.

The archetypes of the divine feminine and divine masculine associated with this season of Yule are: the Inner Girl Child and the Inner Boy Child. These energies are still alive within all of us — just waiting for us to rediscover them! These parts of us remember how to dream. They let themselves dream big dreams! And they can show us how to dream big dreams again too, if we’ll let them.

These parts of us remember who we wanted to be and what we wanted to do before the world got its hands on us and told us who we should be and what we ought to do. Your inner child can help you remember too!

This season is about fun, adventure, and freedom from expectations! What would it feel like to set aside the weight of expectations just for a little while? Can you feel what that could feel like? Can you let yourself feel it?
